Vietnam grab four golds at World Chess Championships

Hosts Vietnam won an individual gold medal and three team golds at the Youth World Chess Championships 2008 which ended in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province Friday.

Tran Minh Thang won the U8 male category gold medal. Despite winning the gold before the final round, Thang played exceptionally well and defeated Canadian Lee Jonah in the final game.

Tran Minh Thang won the U8 male category gold medal. Despite winning the gold before the final round, Thang played exceptionally well and defeated Canadian Lee Jonah in the final game.


After 11 matches, Thang won the title with 10 points after ten wins and one loss, followed by second-placed Liu Xiangyi of China who had nine points.

In the U18 male category, gold hopeful GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son only won the silver medal behind gold winner Saric Ivan of Croatia after drawing with Tomczak Jacek from Poland in the final game. However, Son together with GM Le Quang Liem and Tran Manh Tien won the team gold medal.
 
The U18 female category gold medal also went to the host team consisting of Pham Bich Ngoc, Ngo Dieu Hoa and Nguyen Thi Diem Huong. The fourth gold was captured by the U16 female category team made up of Hoang Thi Nhu Y, Vo Thi Kim Phung and Le Hoang Tran Chau.
