Look for solutions to "diagnose and control" vortex-pools at Back Beach (Vungtau City)

In the past time, the vortex-pools in Vungtau beaches always endanger tourists, making big impacts on the tourist environment. To tackle vortex-pools, the Science and Technology Department was tasked to implement the project "Researching on the causes and mechanism of vortexes formation in Bai Sau (Back Beach) and proposing solutions to handle vortex-pools”. Currently, the subject was accepted by the provincial Science Council and is being submitted to the provincial People"s Committee in order to implement the pilot.

Dr. Bui Quoc Nghia – an expert of Research and Development of Science and Technology INOVA Joint Stock Company – the head of this subject said, in the northeast monsoon, there are about 74 vortex-pools in Back Beach area, with average density of 7 pools/1km of beach. The vortex-pools are often prone to the shoreline; some pools are nearly parallel to the shoreline. The depth of vortex-pools is more than 1 meter, the door of pool is directed to the sea, and the top of pool is directed towards the shore. The size of the pools is often from several tens to hundred meters long and about several tens meters wide. When a strong wave impacts on the vortex-pools, creating a very strong and dangerous flow into the sea. Main causes which forms these vortex-pools are complicated variation in directions of monsoon; magnitude of tides...

According to statistics, in 2008, the life-saving force in Vungtau City had picked up nearly 900 cases of tourists being turned buoy, drifted buoy, fallen into vortex-pools. In the 6 months of 2009, this force has picked up 440 cases of visitors fallen into vortex-pools. Vortex-pools are not only dangerous for tourists but also cause damages to the works for tourism; cause accumulation of waste at the beach making the environment polluted...

In order to reduce the annual damages caused by votex-pools, the subject: " Researching on the causes and mechanism of vortexes formation in Bai Sau (Back Beach) and proposing solutions of handling vortex-pools” proposing overall solutions to handle vortex-pools and improving terrain and landscape of Back Beach. In which, the theme has focused on the works such as: the South embankment of sand barrier at Nghinh Phong Cape; embankment of sand barriers at the Cua Lap area and Chi Linh tourist area; cruise ship port in the middle of small arcs; soft embankment of sand barrier perpendicular to the shoreline in order to create protruding nose into the sea to reduce the length of small arcs. At the same time, expanding a part of beach and creating an environmental landscape. In addition, to reduce the waves, change direction of waves, restrict the move and activities of the vortex-pools shall have to execute the works of wave embankment being parallel with the shoreline.

Leaders of the Science and Technology Department said that the scientific theme of Dr. Bui Quoc Nghia and his colleagues has been checked and taken over by the provincial Science Council in April 2007 and being submitted to the provincial People"s Committee for approval, for funding to conduct a pilot of a part in the area surveyed. This is considered the first application of treatment solutions for vortex-pools, renovating the beach on a large scale in our country. Therefore, the expectation after doing the pilot, the Department of Science and Technology will invite the French experts to consult, support and exchange of experience (as the France has been successful with the treatment works of vortex-pools).
