Authorities in the central province of Quang Ngai will invest VND15 billion (US$718,700) in restoring two whale skeletons, one of which is believed to be the country’s largest.
The larger of the two skeletons, reported to have been kept in An Vinh Commune, Ly Son District, for hundreds of years, is more than 20 meters long, VnExpress reported Saturday. Each of its ribs is nearly ten meters long.
According to local authorities, the restoration project will also include a 700-square-meter display hall and other facilities for the exhibition of the skeletons next to the Tan Tomb – a whale cemetery.
Nguyen Dang Vu, director of Quang Ngai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, was quoted by the news website that the Tan Tomb is home to the largest number of whale skeletons in the country.
He said dozens of tombs have been built over many years in Ly Son to worship the giant creature, considered a god by Vietnamese fishermen.
