PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc called on the two continents to strengthen dialogues in a constructive and cooperative manner and share benefits and responsibilities to ensure a peaceful and sustainable environment.
The PM made that statement at the second day of the 11th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit on July 16 in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.
The Government chief said economic, connectivity and cooperation targets can not be reached in an unstable and contingent environment.
He suggested all ASEM members continue upholding their political determinations and responsibilities to accelerate regional, inter-regional and global cooperative dialogue mechanisms, focusing on measures on trust building and preventive diplomacy.
Although Asia-Pacific remains the global growth engine, recent developments in the East Sea-a key sea line-has eroded confidence and increased tensions, which may have potential to threaten peace, security and stability in the region and the world, PM Phuc stressed.
ASEAN has recently made realistic contributions to peace, security and stability in the region, he stated, adding that the bloc has consistently maintained its position to promote dialogues, enhance measures to build trust and preventive diplomacy, exercise self-restraint, fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) while working towards to the conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.
Disputes must be settled through peaceful ways in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and by full respect for diplomatic and legal processes, the Vietnamese leader said.
He affirmed Viet Nam has doubled efforts together with ASEAN members and the international community in order to make practical and responsible contributions to and accelerate dialogues to maintain peace, security and stability in the region and the world.
ASEM leaders to the summit focused discussions on a wide ranges of issues, especially those related to peace, security, terrorism and maritime security.
A Declaration was issued to strongly condemn terrorist attacks in both Asia and Europe and offer deep condolences to the Government and people of France for great losses caused by the recent terrorist attack in Nice city.
Many ASEM members expressed their concerns over the new developments which cause impacts on the security environment in Asia, including the happenings in the East Sea and East China Sea.
The leaders agreed on an urgent need to maintain peace, security and stability, pledging to work together to ensure peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of aviation and navigation as well as trade.
The same day, the 11th ASEAM concluded. Key documents were approved, namely the Chair’s Statement and the Ulan Bator Declaration, which state the determination of the ASEAM leaders to strengthen Europe-Asia cooperation.
The leaders also approved 20 new initiatives, welcomed the EU to host the 12th ASEM Summit in 2018 and Myanmar to host ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in 2017./.
