Politburo member and President of Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan has asked Ho Chi Minh city authorities to create the most favourable condition to develop the city’s science and technology sector.

The VFF President made the request on August 6 while attending a seminar held by the city Department of Science and Technology to seek ways to build Ho Chi Minh City as an incubator for renovation and creative startups.

The event was held as part of activities celebrating the department’s 40th founding anniversary (1976-2016).

He praised Ho Chi Minh City as one of the country's largest economic hubs, where many businesses and residents have worked out scientific initiatives and successfully applied advanced technologies in daily life and production.

He called on businesses to promote their creativity in operation and play a more motive role in creating jobs for the city’s employees.

He stressed that the city needed to attach great attention to startups programmes in order to reach its target of expanding the number of enterprises to 500,000 by 2020.

Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong said that over its 40 years of development, the city’s Department of Science and Technology has made remarkable contributions to raising productivity, shifting economic structure and renovating the growth model of the city.

Identifying science and technology is the key to the operation of all sectors, Chairman Phong said that in the coming time, Ho Chi Minh City would provide financial support for startups projects, step up the establishment of a venture capital fund in science and technology, and develop a network of sci-tech services and technological transfer services.

Delegates at the event focused their discussions on how to boost renovation activities in the city and tighten the connection between the State, businesses, sci-tech research institutes and organisations.

On the occasion, an online exhibition was launched at 40nam.dost.hochiminhcity.gov.vn, recalling the 40-year development and achievements of the city’s Department of Science and Technology.
