Odorless sewer technology
-   +   A-   A+     28/12/2007

Event though it is a rainy or sunny day , you hardly sense bad odor from sewers when walking on pavements or sitting in a side-walk coffees in Vung Tau as you do in other urban areas. It is the fact that Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu has pioneered the use of “Stemming bad odor from sewers technology” developed by engineer Hoàng Đức Thảo, who is also the director of the Baria-Vungtau Urban Sewerage And Drainage   Company (BUSADCO).

In addition to the new systems of stemming bad odor and draining rain-water, Mr. Thao has invented equipment for dredging underground sewers to prevent waterlogged problem in the absence of manpower. These two inventions helped him to win the Vifotec award best scientific and technological innovations). He was also honored by the Prime Minister, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and the Youth Union’s Central Committee awarded him a “Sang Tao Tre” certificate for first stemming bad odor from sewers in Vietnam

The systems of stemming bad odor and draining rain-water by engineer Hoàng Đức Thảo is simply designed with three main sections: 2 soakage pits(one is on the street right next to the pavement, the other with stemming bad odor system, is on the surface of the pavement) and a pitch that carries water into the main soakage pit. This is the new stemming bad odor which has applied in Vietnam fro the first time. It helps to prevent the bad odor from the soakage pit which caused an unpleasant feeling for city-dwellers and pedestrians.

“Because bad odor comes from the daily waste water mixed with rain-water, it is very difficult to annulled waste matter and toxic gas. This new system ensures to stem bad odor, reduce pollution, drain water to prevent flood, reinforce the strength of the technological substructure system and help the city become more beautiful looking”, Engineer Thao said.

Besides, this system also help to prevent the erosion concerning to the geological, topographic, and hydrographic conditions of Vietnam. Thanks to the simple and orderly composition, the system is convenient for manufacturing and installing when using domestic raw material to reach Vietnamese standard.

This system has been installing for roads in coastal city, Vungtau. In comparison with the previous soakage system, the new one costs less (about 1.2 million dongs). Therefore, Baria_Vungtau will save billions when installing this new technology.

Arms” for dredging underground sewers

As soon as joining Baria-Vungtau Urban Sewerage And Drainage   Company in Vungtau, Engineer Hoang Duc Thao was compassionated with the workers who had to creep into soakage pits with all dirty thick black mud and bad smell to dredge bucket after bucket of mud manually. This procedure is not only harmful for the workers but also less effective. The workers can only creep into the 3-5 metre diameter sewers while each of the sewers’ lids is about tens metres far. Dregs still remain at the bed of the pits. To use specialized vehicles to surmount this problem will cost billions dongs. Moreover, when the vehicles are working, its operation can damage or break the knots of the pits. In the other hand, if other specialized equipments are used, workers have to creep into the pits.

After 7 months of researching, engineer Thao has launched a set of tools, considered as “an arm” to put into the pits to dredge mud. These tools have many advantages like operating simply, dredging and easily softening the thick dense mud, which have stayed inside the pits for a long time, and drain the mud to soakage pit’s mouth.

This system is very mobile, easy and safe to use event when the sewers are full of water. The workers do not have to creep into the dark sewers. After these tools were applied, thousands of cubic metres of dregs were collected. The sewers are empty and no longer blocked during the heavy rainy season. The spending for this equipment is about 10 millions dongs, hundreds times cheaper than the imported ones.

The youth breakthough

Being a child of “5-ton” town, namely Thai Binh, graduating from Viet Duc Technical School, Hoang Duc Thao worked for the 10 Construction Company, which belongs to Ministry of Construction. Then he left Thai Binh for the south to work for Ha Tien Cement Company in Kien Giang. Experiencing many difficulties during the subsidized economy period, he was determined to get a good degree of University of Finance and Accounting. Before being appointed the director of Baria-Vungtau Urban Sewerage And Drainage   Company in Vungtau in 2003, he used to work as an accountant, project supervisor… In his new position, he has gathered a pretty number of young engineers to work for his company. Besides managing and operating the water supplying system for the whole province, the company is controlling the investment and construction of15 projects with the capital of 2.800 billions. The company also supplies consultancy services and installations for households and organizations in Baria-Vungtau and other provinces. Hoàng Đức Thảo is not only good at managing but also very keen on science researches. He owns lots of researches, new applications in water drainage and environmental sanitation. Creation and technology are his motto to success. This year, he has carried out a subject on “making and applying new regulating sewers to rinse, to dilute, to drain quickly, to reduce environmental pollution at regulating ponds and drainage canals within the city”. He also carries on and improves the dredging-pit systems so that the workers do not have to work with toxic dregs.
