Engineer Le Ngoc Khanh (photo), having worked in many research production units affiliated to the Ho Chi Minh Department of Science & Technology, now in retirement, disclosed that there is a solution for overcoming the trouble of spread oil in a thorough and not expensive way.

He explains that spread oil comprises two types: liquid and solid, so it is possible to use absorbing material to absorb liquid oil, and dense nets to decant solid oil after floating the buoy to encircle the spread oil not to let it further spreading.

This technology for dealing with spread oil had been studied by a scientists team in Ho Chi Minh City, comprising: Eng. Le Ngoc Khanh, Dr. Nguyen Tran Duong, Dr. Tran Tri Luan and Prof. Nguyen Huu Nieu.

The oil absorbing Sow. Th fibrous pieces

About this technological solution, Mr. Khanh explains as follows: For preventing the oil to spread in sea-shore/ river bank, at 40 - 50 m from the shore, launching two crafts / boats stretching a cable / cord with floating buoys attached on it. When the waves push ashore, the oil shall be retained / blocked by floating buoys. After the oil traces had been delimited / encircled, the oil absorbing fibrous pieces shall be thrown down.

When these fibrous pieces being saturated with oil, substitute it by new ones to further absorb the oil till ending, at the same time to bring oil saturated pieces on the craft / boat for pressing and getting oil. The key issues being: the oil absorbing fibrous pieces and the floating buoys are made from what kind of materials, their effect, their duration of use?

Mr. Khanh let the reporter see that each oil absorbing fibrous piece and oil absorbing buoy is rectangular, 1.5 m long, 30  cm large and 10cm thick.

Dr. Nguyen Tran Duong, project manager disclosed that the oil absorbing piece is made from Petro Abs synthetic fibre, in two types: Sow. Th1 and Sow. Th2. Sow. Th1 mainly absorbs light oils: diesel, petroleum, organic solvent, vegetal oil... Each kilogram of material could absorb 25 - 30 kg oil once, with re-use capacity up to 400 times. Sow. Th2 is used to absorb crude oil, FO, liquid rubber, grease... Each kilogram of material could absorb 60 - 65 kilogram of oil, with re-use capacity over 600 times, thus each kilogram could recuperate 40 - 50 tons of oil. After the oil having been absorbed by absorbing pieces, the subsequent operation consists in bringing it on crafts to press and getting oil by machines.

Machine for separating oil from water

Engineer Le Ngoc Khanh also introduced a machine for separating oil from water, called OWS constructed by him since 10 years.

He poured the compound oil - water into the machine, only in some seconds, water and oil being separated by two different taps. This machine has a productivity of 50 cu.m/day (experimental model), and a capacity of waste water treatment at a purity less than 1 ppm.

Engineer Khanh explained the machine operation principle: Inside the machine there is a thin mesh with openings about 1 - 2 cm, by special alloy. When the compound oil - water is poured into the barrel, the machine shall make the mesh vibrate thus creating an electro - magnetic field, and this very electro-magnetic field impacts on the oil, pushs the oil on the upper part of the barrel and the oil runs out by a specific tap, white the water sinks into the lower part and runs outside by another tap.

Particularly, the machine operates automatically when the compound oil - water is poured into it, without need of electric power. This machine is installed on special craft / boat for dealing with spreading oil trouble. Coming to oil spreading zone, it needs only to put on the pipe for sucking up oil of water for running into the machine, the oil shall be separated whilst the water runs down the sea.

For the time being, the research team had produced equipment able to treat 200 cu.m of water polluted by oil / per day and it is possible to link together 10 machines for reaching a water treatment capacity of 2,000 cu.m/day.

The inventions Method for producing spread oil collecting materials under the fibrous form and Equipment for separating oil from water by Engineer Le Ngoc Khanh had been granted with the Exclusive Invention Diploma by the Department of Industrial Property in 1999 and the Invention Diploma of the Japan Invention Department.

Extremely cheap production cost

Engineer Le Ngoc Khanh disclosed: With present troubles of spreading oil, it is only necessary to use helicoptere or vessel for rescuing oil spread to transport oil absorbing materials to the affected zone (having been blocked by the buoys) and dropping it down for absorbing the oil. 1 ton of oil absorbing materials could absorb 40,000 - 50,000 tonnes of oil. The production cost of tonne of oil absorbing material made in Vietnam is excessively cheap, as compared with foreign made material. With the a.m. treatment, the duration for overcoming trouble shall be reduced in a very large extent as compared with the present manual collection practice, and the environment is also cleaned at the utmost. Mr. Khanh is ready to cooperate with functional organs to overcome the oil spreading trouble in the sea.
