Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the RoK’s continued recruitment of Vietnamese guest workers in the next two years through the employment permit system (EPS) programme. Signatories to the MoU in Seoul were Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and her RoK counterpart Lee Young-hui.
“Labour cooperation between
Vietnam and the RoK would be further developed,” affirmed Vietnamese Minister Ngan after the signing ceremony.
Under the MoU, both sides pledged to facilitate the recruitment of Vietnamese guest workers.
They also committed to re-employing workers who abide by their contracts and working closely together to deal with contract breakers.
According to the statistics of the RoK’s
Labour Ministry, Vietnam is currently topping the list of foreign workers entering the country under the EPS programme with 8,000 workers being sent to the market in the first seven months of the year.
Between August 2004 and
June 30, 2008, 31,511 Vietnamese workers arrived in the RoK and more than 2,890 Vietnamese workers had their contracts renewed.
Most of Vietnamese labourers work in production, manufacturing and construction while a small number of them are involved in agriculture and fisheries sectors.
