Stabiplage® Technology for protecting coasts from erosion - Effectively applied at Loc An

In 2005, Baria-Vungtau province carried out a project for seaside anti-erosion treatment by “Stabiplage®” technology on Loc An zone, Dat Do distric. As a result, Stabiplage works has restricted the erosive phenomenon occurring in the protected area after 3 year operation. The successfulness has opend opportunities for applying a new technological solution to protecting coasts from erosion in not only Baria-Vungtau province but also other places across the country where have similar situations.

During the past years, from the Cape of Nghinh Phong, Vungtau City to Binh Chau Commune, Xuyen Moc District, there are 6 areas of Beaches and River Mouths eroded and extended with deposits. They are: Thuy Van Beach, Paradise Beach, Mouth of Lap River, Mouth of Loc An, Ho Tram and Binh Chau. In the face of such real situation, many localities have applied several methods such as constructing some projects of sea walls, but in the short time they have been fallen down, or the method of dredging river channels, but they have been filled up quickly. So, the local administrators as well as the scientists have had many difficulties in looking for methods to overcome this danger.

Stabiplage (in French, it means stabilizing the banks. This is a structure of soil-synthetic materials sprayed sand-mortar by hydraulic power. Its nature is monolithic and its new shape makes project form which occupies a few surface, and creates a strange project for environment at the same time) has been carried out as a pilot project from July 2005 with its targets are resistance the washing away on 500 meters of beaches, blocking opened river mouths, re-establishing natural profin in order to protect marshes and lagoons inside, residental quarters, tourist areas and the road along the beach opposite the river mouth… Thus, the project which resists the erosion of Loc An Beaches has been implemented with 8 Stabiplages placed at right angles to beaches (soldering-iron model). The following works are: building boundaries to execute the work at the site; Determining the positions to install Stabiplage works with located equipments and land marks; Creating a trench in order to put Stabiplages and anchors; Deploying the laying Stabiplage pipes along the trench; Locating the works by laser; Installing water and sand pump system (pump-engines with high power and high pressure); Spraying sand to fill up Stabiplage works in order to create ranges of sand ready for operation.

The operational principle of Stabiplage Technology is collection, agglomeration and maintenance locally sediments, not to resist the nature but to help nature through the activities of coastal hydrodynamics and moving sediments into along the seacoasts, from there it will create exchanges stabilizing motive power of eroded areas which needed to be dealt with. The process of activities of Stabiplages with appropriate size allows waves crossing sediments and sand, but leaving an amount of sand when moving along the seasides. Therefore, the amount of sand collected will agglomerate little by little along the work, after that it will be stabilized and raised the height of the Beaches to reinforce and re-create the Beaches.

After more than 3 years of implementing the project, the mouths which were opened at Loc An have been blocked. The project has stopped the erosion, at the same time restoring the sand-bands and moving naturally to the sea, an average of 25-30 meters, but some places from 60 to 70 meters on all line of approximately 600 meters. Within the area protected by the project, the sand-bands have been strengthened, raised and lengthened, encroached upon the sea an average of 40-60 meters. Estimating approximately 30,000-40,000 m2 of sand protected stably with the amount of sand piled up naturally of 145,000-150,000 m3. The Stabiplage Project associated with Ganivells Sub-project (sand-trap fences) has developed its effect obviously. Sand being agglomerated between fences has created a beach-line and re-created ranges of sand-hill.

The Stabiplage Project has obtained its targets, stopping the erosion and protecting the areas of Loc An Beaches, Mr. Truong Thanh Cong, Director of Science and Technology Department, Chairman of the Project said. The success of the Project shall be a new contribution of science and technology for field of protecting environmental resources, serving the development of socio-economic. So, the Department of Science and Technology expects the functional branches to examine in order to deploy soon this technology for stopping erosive phenomenon at the remaining areas of other localities.
