State pushes open-source software

The Ministry of Information and Communications has said that all servers of IT divisions in Government agencies must install open-source software by June 30.

The ministry also said that at least 50 percent of those who use them must be trained to use the software proficiently.

Open-source software products include OpenOffice, e-mail software for servers of Mozilla ThunderBird, Mozilla Firefox web browsers and the Vietnamese typing software Unikey.

The instruction also said that by the end of December, 70 percent of servers in local State agencies must have the software installed and 70 percent of IT staff trained in its use.

The agencies been told to increase the number of documents and information exchanged between them processed by the software. And by the end of next year, all staff at these agencies must be able to use open-source software.
