Ho Chi Minh City"s first gas pipeline began pumping the fuel fro oilfields off the coast of Ba Ria Vung Tau Province last Thursday.

The 39-kilometer pipeline, operated by PetroVietnam Gas, a unit of Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, supplies gas to the Hiep Phuoc Power Plant in Nha Be District. The plant transforms 2.7 million cubic meters of the relatively clean alternative fuel into energy for the city each day.

Sourcing gas from Bach Ho Oilfield, the pipeline also pumps 7.7 million cubic meters of gas per day to the Hiep Phuoc Industrial Zone also in Nha Be and the Nhon Trach Power Plant in the adjacent province of Dong Nai.

In related news, Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, also known as PetroVietnam, signed an agreement with military authorities in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho last month to develop the country’s longest gas pipeline.

The 400 kilometer-project would carry gas from Depot B on the southwestern continental shelf through the four Mekong Delta provinces of Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang and Hau Giang, supplying industrial zones on its way to the Can Tho-based O Mon Power Station.
