ASEAN-China Intellectual Property Cooperation Conference held

Organized by China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), ASEAN-China Intellectual Property Cooperation Conference opened on April 13. SIPO Commissioner Tian Lipu and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Francis Gurry attended and delivered the opening ceremony.

In his speech, Tian Lipu expressed that, China's State Intellectual Property Office paid much attention to the friendly cooperation with the counterparts of ASEAN member states and hosted two seminars on Sino-ASEAN IPRs in 2005 and 2008, respectively. Tian Lipu stressed that, enhancing the cooperation in IPR fields between China and ASEAN can not only promote the consummation and development of the IPR systems of China and ASEAN member states, raise S&T innovative ability, create sound regional investment environment and boost economic prosperity, but is meaningful in solidifying and deepening the strategic partnership between China and ASEAN and promoting local peace and prosperity.

As a specially invited guest,WIPO Director General Francis Gurry denoted that,the opening of the conference is of significance for China and ASEAN member states to share and exchange IPR experience and advance the economic development of each state by innovation. Gurry stressed that, through China set up patent system only 25 years ago, the achievements made by China in IPRs are worth mentioning. China's PCT applications have jumped to the fifth in the word and China's Intellectual Property Office has become the third important IP office in the world, too. China's successful experience in IPR work is worth learning.

It is informed that over 40 senior officials from the IPR related departments of the 10 ASEAN member states took part in the conference. During the one day and a half long conference, the participants made in-depth discussion with the deputies of China's Intellectual Property Office on their IPR system construction and how to strengthen the cooperation between China and ASEAN in IPR issues.
