Vietnamese gov’t after honored mathematician

The Vietnamese government is making efforts to invite Ngo Bao Chau, whose mathematics research has earned international acclaim and awards, to work in the country.

During a visit to Chau's family Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister, Nguyen Thien Nhan, said the government is willing to offer the best working and living conditions to Chau, whose groundbreaking mathematical proof was honored by TIME Magazine as one of the top ten scientific discoveries of 2009.

Currently a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, 38-year-old Chau will work as a professor of mathematics at the University of Chicago from September 1 this year.

Chau received his doctoral degree from Université Paris-Sud in 1997. He was granted the Clay Research Award in 2004, the Oberwolfach Prize in 2007 and the Prix Sophie Germain de l'Académie des Sciences de Paris the same year.
