APEC needs to continue efforts to resolve consequences of the global economic-financial crisis and bring the world economy into a new stage of growth, said the Vietnamese Head of State.

State President Nguyễn Minh Triết made the statement yesterday in Yokohama, Japan, while delivering his speech at the first retreat of the 18th APEC Summit.

The Asia-Pacific region, especially East Asia, said Mr. Triết, should continue to function as a driving force for the global economic recovery and development.

According to President Triết, it is a pressing issue for the international community to pursue better cooperation and joint efforts in the new growth strategy in which economic development must be associated with social development and environment protection, with the focus on human being.

The State President suggested APEC reinforce cooperation to narrow down the development gap among the group’s members.

As the Chair of ASEAN in 2010, President Triết also highlighted ASEAN’s achievements and contributions to promoting sustainable growth.

On the sidelines of the Summit, President Triết met with Peruvian President Alan Garcia Perez and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to talk about measures to spur bilateral ties, discuss international and regional issues of common concern, and map out ways to enhance cooperation and coordination at international forums, including APEC./.
