Accelerate construction progress of Cai Mep – Thi Vai International Port

Moring, 10 March, in the supervision plan of the port system in the province, the Economics - Budget Department of the Provincial People’s Council had a working session with the Project Management Unit 85 (PMU 85) on the implementation of the Cai Mep - Thi Vai International Port development project. The PMU 85 (a member of the Ministry of Transport) is the representative investor.

Moring, 10 March, in the supervision plan of the port system in the province, the Economics - Budget Department of the Provincial People’s Council had a working session with the Project Management Unit 85 (PMU 85) on the implementation of the Cai Mep - Thi Vai International Port development project. The PMU 85 (a member of the Ministry of Transport) is the representative investor.

According to the investor, the project started construction in 2008, is divided into 6 construction bidding packages and 2 consulting services package with a total investment of nearly VND14,000 billion in ODA loans from Japan International Agency cooperative organization (JICA) and the reciprocal capital of Vietnam.

Out of the 6 packages mentioned above, there are 2 port packages. In particular, the Cai Mep port is designed to receive container vessels with a tonnage of up to 80.000DWT, passing capacity of 600,000 - 700,000 TUE / year; wharf length of 600m with a total area of ​​48ha. The Thi Vai port is capable of receiving 75,000 DWT vessels, capacity through the port reaches 1.6 - 2 million tons / year. The total area of ​​the port is 27ha. The project is expected to complete and put into operation in 2012.

Delivering speech at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Du, Manager of the Economics – Budget Department of the Provincial People’s Council - emphasized that with the scale nature of the project, PMU 85 needs to urgently speed up the packages, specially, the route 965 to facilitate operation of the port, contribute to the local economic development as well as key areas in the South.
