UNESCO considers VN’s carved woodblocks

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will consider woodblocks printed with Buddhist Sutras at Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda in the northern province of Bắc Giang for a World Documentary Heritage recognition

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will consider woodblocks printed with Buddhist Sutras at Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda in the northern province of Bắc Giang for a World Documentary Heritage recognition.   

A working group comprising officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Bắc Giang province headed to Warsaw, Poland, on May 18 for the UNESCO’s sessions during which new tangible and intangible heritages of the world will be assessed and voted for.

Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda houses 3,050 woodblocks containing a wide range of information about the development and teachings of Trúc Lâm Zen Buddhism, which was founded by King-Monk Trần Nhân Tông in Việt Nam in the 11th century.

According to scientists, woodblocks in Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda were kept intact and they are unique.

The UNESCO will officially announce new cultural and documentary heritages on May 26./.
