It seems that BlackBerry is planning a return to the Vietnamese market after it once stirred up the market two years ago, sources say.

Analysts say they can see the signs showing that BlackBerry wants to return to Vietnam. Two years ago, the appearance of BlackBerry on the Vietnamese market created a new consumption tendency in market, which can be compared with the appearance of Apple’s product series now. However, BlackBerry, like Nokia has become dull amid the appearance of iPhone and some other smartphone models with multi-touch screens.

On July 11, tinhte.vn, a forum of high-tech players, reported that RIM (Research in Motion) has begun selling BlackBerry 9780 in Vietnam with the sale region clearly written down on the products’ packages.

BlackBerry 9780 has an interface in Vietnamese, supports Vietnamese typing, while catalogues and associated documents are also in Vietnamese. The sale price of the product is 12 million dong.

The media representative of RIM in Vietnam has released a notice that on July 19 and July 21, in HCM City and Hanoi, RIM will hold press conferences to announce the plan to join the Vietnamese market by providing services relating to BlackBerry.

The fact that RIM manufacturers mobile phones specifically designed for the Vietnamese market, and that it officially announces the plan to conquer the Vietnamese market both shows that Vietnam remains an attractive and potential markets in the eyes of the Canadian manufacturers, even though the market has gathered all the big guys in world which provide a wide range of products, from popular to high grade ones.

Meanwhile, Viettel, one of the three biggest mobile service providers in Vietnam has announced that since July 15, the charges for the BlackBerry service packages have been slashed by nearly 50 percent. Viettel has also said that it now allows users to register BlackBerry services via messages. The preferences are believed to attract more BlackBerry users.

Nevertheless, experts have commented that the “good news” is still not enough to pave the way for BlackBerry to “make a mark” in Vietnam, to create a new consumption tendency or dominate the market in the market segment of smart phones. iPhones too are now being a favorite on the market, while HTC and Samsung have continuously launched new touch-screen models.

Especially, on information technology forums, daily discussions mainly focus on iPhone, Galaxy or HTC.

Besides the BlackBerry 9780, RIM plans to launch seven other smart phone models. In the immediate time, 9900 would hit the market, to be followed by 9860, 9850, 9810, 9360 and versions using CDMA/GSM technologies.

A common feature of all the above said smart phone models, is that they all use the traditional keyboard of RIM – QWERTY.

Meanwhile, according to technology experts, this kind of keyboard has become no longer favorite, since touch keyboard has become prevalent. Though the new models and the ways to use have been designed by BlackBerry for the youth, the majority of young customers have shifted to use touch-screen smart phones.

Regarding the 9780 model specifically designed for the Vietnamese market, experts say the design may not be really convenient and responsive to young consumers, while making messages in Vietnamese is not routine for this class of consumers.

Experts have also pointed out a problem of BlackBerry’s smart phones--that the screens of the phones are relatively small. Therefore, BlackBerry may not be the choice of the young people who want the phones which allow them to watch films, video clips or play games.

Especially, the prices of BlackBerry’s products are believed to be relatively high, which are nearly the same with the prices of the smart phones now prevailing on the market. The high prices would be a big obstacle for BlackBerry to create a new consumption tendency in Vietnam.
