Joint Workshop on earthquake and tsunami issues for Ninhthuan NPP site approval

On 26 July 2010, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS) in collaboration with the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES) and the Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corporation (Rosatom) of Russia organized the Joint Workshop on earthquake and tsunami issues for Ninhthuan NPP site approval. Vice Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien and Vice Minister of Trade and Industry Hoang Quoc Vuong came to attend and address at the Workshop.

Participants in the Workshop are foreign experts from Russia, Japan, France, USA, Armenia and the IAEA, and Vietnamese scientists, regulators from the related ministries, agencies.

Addressing opening speech, Vice Minister Le Dinh Tien sent his greeting and sincere thanks to delegates. He also expressed his deep sympathy with Japanese people after earthquake and tsunami on March 11. He stressed, nuclear accident caused by the twin catastrophe makes many countries with nuclear power program to seriously consider nuclear safety issue. As for Vietnam, nuclear safety should be increased to focus right now on site selection phrase in which natural factors are taken into account, especially earthquake and tsunami.

During the Workshop, Vietnamese scientists presented research on earthquake, tsunami in Ninhthuan with evaluation results that serve for site selection work. Regulation of Russia and Japan related to earthquake and tsunami for NPP site approval and survey method, scope, research for Ninhthuan NPP, introduced by experts from Rosatom, JINED, JAPC and JNES, received much attention of delegates. Experts from France and Armenia also provided reports on NPP site survey and research.

 

The Workshop taken place in the context that organizations of Vietnam and partners are preparing necessary activities for introducing nuclear power in Vietnam. In recent years, VARANS chaired research, with consultancy from related ministries, agencies and foreign experts, for building a draft circular on NPP site selection.
