According to Green Material Co., Ltd., in November 2011, the building materials factory from electric arc furnace slag with the capacity of 1,000 tons/ day invested by this company in Phu My 1 Industrial Zone, Tan Thanh district would be officially put into operation.

This is the first project on recycling steel slag in Vietnam which its appraisal on environmental impact assessment was approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Products of the project are recycled steel slag including adobe brick, cement additives, steel slag aggregate replaced for materials with natural source for reinforcing construction, road building, waste water treatment filter projects, etc…The project has a total investment of VND44.7 billion, on an area of 2 ha. At present, Green Material Co., Ltd., is expediting construction of the main items such as a concrete yard containing steel slag, production workshop and storage area for finished products, wastewater treatment and collection systems, brick factory.

Ba Ria - Vung Tau is the place gathering steel refineries and considered as the metallurgical center of the whole country with the steel output of about 3.75 million tons/ year, quantity of steel slag is predicted approximately 412,000 - 562,500 tons/ year. Currently, the majority of waste generated from steel mills in the province is being stored at the mills due to the absence of treatment systems, in which many plants are overloaded. Steel slag dusts and causes environmental pollution.

According to the environmental management, this is a waste treatment project in the form of socialization conducted fastest in the province. Within six months since granting the investment certificate, this project was officially put into operation. This project will contribute to solve the risk of pollution caused by steel slag, save production costs for steel mills. On the other hand, the use of recycled steel slag (about 0.5 million m3 per year) to replace the stone and soil materials… will partly reduce pressure on the supply of building materials, lessen the state of natural resources depletion and contribute to environmental protection of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.
