To become a national logistics hub, Ba Ria - Vung Tau are on track for big investors, with modern management level in the multilateral supply chain. That was the goal that the province has high hope for support and cooperation from large logistics group in the world.

Despite advantages and potentials for port development, domestic firms which have after-port logistic services in the province are not strong enough, lacks in cooperation and uninterrupted organization of logistic services. Most businesses operating in logistics services have limited capital and technology, they have only, therefore, stopped as a satellite of service supply for foreign firms in some parts of the logistics chain such as services of customs clearance, cargo handling, vehicle rental, warehouses; supply of electricity, water, fuel for ships ... Hardly any company is capable of organizing, running the entire logistics operation processes.

According to shipping companies, over 95% of exports through the ports at Cai Mep - Thi Vai area is transported by barge from the Ho Chi Minh City port and the ICD ports from Dong Nai, Binh Duong. Presently, the province has 52 port projects, in which 24 projects with a capacity of about 67.5 million tons were put into operation. However, in 2011, the production of goods through the ports only reached about 45 million tons. Therefore, if this situation lasts, the birth of Cai Mep - Thi Vai will not meet the basic objective that is to reduce the load and jam at the Ho Chi Minh City port area. In addition, some exporters in the province have put up goods to the ports in Ho Chi Minh City. These issues show that logistics businesses in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province have not yet attracted customers although there are now many advantages. This is the cause of reduced competitiveness of the port system.

Faced with required development of logistics services, the provincial leaders have recently traveled for learning experience at large logistics corporations in Germany and the Netherlands. Right after that, February 29, Hellmann Group had expressed willingness to support and cooperate by appointing Dr. Achim Deja, special envoy of the Hellmann Group’s Management Board to work with the provincial People’s Committee on discussing the logistics development in the province.

Initially, Hellmann will support, suggest the province in the long-term and sustainable development strategy, which includes factors such as human resource training, improvement of supply chain management, as well as planning of action plans. Along with that, the Hellmann Group will directly contact with businesses in the field of logistics activities in the province to identify important chain link that needs to be assisted in the supply chain.

Mr. Ho Van Nien, Deputy Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, stated that the Hellmann Group"s goodwill in support, cooperation and investment in intensifying capability for local logistics businesses was a good sign. Local authorities would create every favorable condition for Hellmann Group to contact, exchange, face to face with logistics businesses in the province. Thereby, the Group would have realistic view, give the most appropriate support solutions for each specific business. This would be a great opportunity for businesses to learn, support and improve their services in logistics supply chain – further said Mr. Ho Van Nien.
