Microsoft, as a key sponsor of the Security World 2016, organised by the Ministry of Public Security in Hanoi,  made a keynote presentation on big-data, cybersecurity and public awareness at the event.

Microsoft shared the latest trends around rising cybercrime, increasing sophistication of the attacks, challenges around managing cybersecurity, and some of its key big-data powered next-generation cybersecurity tools, solutions, including best practices in building a trusted Public Cloud platform. .

Held annually since 2007, the Security World event is the largest IT security conference in Vietnam, where top corporate executives, senior government leaders, IT managers and technological professionals gather for technology updates and best practice sharing. This year, the Security World 2016 features the theme “Monitoring Information Safety and Data Security: An Urgent Demand for The Digital Age”.

The conference aims to help government, organisations and enterprises assess current information security threats, as well as suggest solutions for them to quickly react to the strong development of security risks and comply with new security regulations.

The world faces increasing information insecurity in regards to digital sovereignty and cyber warfare, which had resulted in devastating attacks in the last few years. And Vietnam is not an exception. Vietnam is increasing its investments in IT Infrastructure, consumption and modernisation of businesses, banking and finance industry, and government departments and public services, and is increasingly facing the cybercrime attacks and threats, unless cybersecurity is given a comprehensive attention.

The general cyber threats are of all kinds, from compromise of systems, online banking fraud, denial of service attacks (DDoS), theft of business data, stealing confidential information, disruption of IT based services etc. The problem becomes more compounded when there is a lack of awareness and sensitization around risks from cybercrime, poor IT management and governance, insufficient cybersecurity practices, and unsecure IT supply chain through large scale use of non-genuine/pirated software.

A report by Vietnam Information Security Association (VNISA) has provided some good insights into the challenges and opportunities. The Information Security Index of Vietnam 2015 (VNISA Index 2015) increased from an average of 39 per cent last year to 46.4 per cent among Vietnamese agencies early this year. Though Vietnam's score was lower than the index benchmark of 50 per cent, its growth showed that agencies, organisations and enterprises had focused more on information security in the past year.

Participating in the Security World 2016, Microsoft’s executive shared Microsoft’s long stanging learnings and expertise on cybersecurity leveraging the power of “Big Data”. “Big Data” has become a big-focus of the technology world, and refers to the combination of social networking as a way of life, ever-growing number of computing devices connected with internet, rising number applications to create, share and exchange information, which is continuously generating huge amount of data-sets from innumerable sources. The traditional data processing systems are inadequate to manage this big-data, thus, requiring companies to invest in advanced storage, analytics, processing and sharing technology, leveraging the power of cloud technologies, to effectively compete and grow in today’s fast changing technology world. But big-data has also attracted the attention of cybercriminals and due to the unprecedented volume, velocity, and variety of the data, information security is becoming more challenging.

"For Microsoft cybersecurity is a top priority to generate “trust” in technology, and we have closely worked with the industry and national governments around the world to help them deploy and use more secure IT solutions and services, to enableprotection of their data, infrastructure, citizens and national economies. With the explosion of digital ecosystems, we aim to bring advanced big-data powered comprehensive “Protect, Detect & Respond” cybersecurity capabilities and expertise to support robust IT security and safety efforts in Vietnam, particularly through our unique security innovations in products like Windows 10, our Trusted Cloud platform and initiaives such as Government Security Programs (GSP) and Threat Intelligence Partnerships,” said Keshav Dhakad, regional director of Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) for the Asian region.

Vietnam’s information security market has remained complicated over the year. With the strong growth of information technology applications, the number of cyber-attacks, intrusions into government agencies, organisations, enterprises to destroy and gather information is increasing. As informed by VNCERT, the center has recorded 31,585 information incidents in Vietnam including 5,898 phishing attacks, 8,850 website defacement cases 16,837 malware one between December 2014 and December 2015.

“Cybercrime is one of the greatest threats facing our country, and has enormous implications for our national security, economic prosperity, and public safety. The range of threats and the challenges they present for law enforcement expand just as rapidly as technology evolves. Cyberspace is growing rapidly. 100,000 new objects connect to the Internet every hour. In 2020, there will be 200 billion IoT devices connected and 5.9 billion smartphones. It is imperative to raise the public user’s awareness of cyber threats and to give them advice on how to protect their computers, from becoming part of a botnet network,” said Robert Trong Tran, senior manager of Cyber Security, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“Microsoft has the longest experience in the IT industry in dealing with cybercrime issues, having an extensive global sensor network, and taking proactive cybercrime disruption efforts which provides us a very unique perspective of rising cybersecurity challenges and how to effectively support customers and partners deal with the trends and threats. We invest over $1 Billion every year in security alone through big-data innovation, R&D & strategic accusations,” Dhakad said.

For Microsoft, cyber security is a No 1 priority to protect its platform and infrastructure, which translates to protecting and providing security to its large customer base. With Trustworthy Computing (TWC) initiative, which started 14 years back, an extensive attention was paid to how Microsoft engineers were coding the software in a highly secure way, to make the software inherently secure. Additionally, leveraging its unique asset like Digital Crimes Unit (DCU), Microsoft has identified, fought and disrupted biggest cybercrime networks, through strong public-private partnerships and legal action and shared threat intelligence to its partners and customers. On top of it, Microsoft has made huge investments in building a security “built-in” strategy for all its products and cloud services, which enables our customers to protect, detect and respond faster.

“What makes Microsoft very effective in analysing and assessing the rising cybercrime threats is its global security intelligence graph – a collection of high value threat intelligence through billions of end-points or systems where Microsoft software is being consumed, which gives the company visibility to the latest threats across the world. It’s a very unique way to use “infrastructure as a sensor” to have the best intelligence in place. Security innovations in Windows 10, enterprise grade security in Cloud solutions (Azure, Office 365, Dynamics, InTune), investments in Machine Learning by way of advancements in advanced threat analytics, behavioral analytics, log analysis, access and identity management, and high-end security services, are just few examples of Microsoft’s efforts in bringing “trust” before our customers and partners,” said Dhakad.
