On May 12^th, the Department of Science and Technology of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province held the scientific conference "The effects of Pyriproxyfen used in mosquito larvae control in waste water in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province" at the Meeting Hall of the Center for Science and Technology Information and Statistics. The conference saw the presence of Eng. Nguyen Kim Truong - Deputy Director of Department of Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Le Huy Ba - Institute for the Environmental Science, Engineering and Management (IESEM), Ho Chi Minh University of Technology (IUH), Dr. Pham Hong Nhat - Vietnam Institute for Tropical Technology and Environment Protection (VITTEP) , Dr. Le Thanh Dong - Director of the Institute of Malaria-Parasitology-Entomology of Ho Chi Minh City and 60 other scientists, researchers and representative from local government agencies and Ba Ria – Vung Tau Urban Sewerage and Development Ltd., Co.

The objective of the conference was to review and assess the potential impact on human health and environment of chemicals containing Pyriproxyfen used in waste water with the purpose of mosquito larvae control. The ultimate purpose was to provide alternative approaches to ensure the province’s sustainable development goal.

According to Professor and Doctor Le Huy Ba, Pyriproxyfen is often used to kill mosquito larvae or to kill insect larvae in order to protect crops. In small doses, pyriproxyfen poses no risk or a minimum risk to humans and mammals health. However with higher concentration such as more than 5 milligram per one kilogram body weight, it may have impact on livers, kidneys and cause digestive disorders or esterozen. However, there is no research or documentation on the impact of Pyriproxyfen used in wastewater currently.
