On June 6th 2016, in Baria city, the Department of Science and Technology held a seminar on "Promoting the role of science and technology in New Rural Development". About 100 delegates and guests attended the seminar, including scientists, managers and representatives from departments and agencies in the provincial Steering Committee for New Rural Development program, businesses and relevant organizations in Baria – Vungtau (BRVT) and other provinces.

During the period from 2010 to 2015, the New Rural Development program in BRVT gained remarkable results thanks to the leadership and guidance of the provincial Party Committee and the People's Committee, the proper implementation by the departments and agencies at various levels, the effective supports of businesses and scientists and especially the active participations of local communities. At the moment, 15 communes in BRVT have fulfilled 19 out of 19 criteria set by the program, in which 13 communes have been recognized as achieving New Rural standards. Among factors contributed to the success of the program, science and technology played a crucial role.

In 5 years (2010-2015), through 35 provincial focal points for scientific and technological information, many solutions were implemented to convert the crop and livestock structure with the aim of improving productivity and increasing economic value. Hundreds of efficient production models applied has improved the income of local communities such as 206 models for crop, livestock farming and fishery in Xuyen Moc district; 220 models for crop and livestock farming in Dat Do district. In particular, Mr. Vu Ngoc Bich (Xuyen Moc Commune, Xuyen Moc district) successfully applied the bio-mattress in pig farming model implemented by the Department of Science and Technology. Moreover, along with the New Rural Development program, many scientific topics and projects were conducted and then research results have been applied with practical value. Exemplary projects include selection of high quality peppercorn in BRVT, application of advanced techniques to develop sustainable production of pepper in line with the Global GAP standards, link production with export companies in Chau Duc district, and safety vegetable production project, ect.

However, the New Rural Development program in BRVT needs to address some limitations and difficulties, for example, the small-scale and fragmented agriculture production, lack of close links between agricultural producers, and shortage of capital to invest in agricultural products. Furthermore, in terms of technical and social infrastructure, the majority of projects, such as schools and cultural facilities in communes, have been slowly implemented due to the lack of capital investment.

At the seminar, scientists and experts suggested some specific solutions and measures to contribute to facilitating the role of science and technology on New Rural Development program, for example: developing policies and solutions on scientific and technological application for rural infrastructure construction and agricultural production; enhancing cooperation and connection between domestic and foreign enterprises to exchange experience and attract supports from businesses, agencies and organizations; increasing trade promotion activities for products from the New Rural communes/districts.
