VietNamNet Bridge - According to sources of information from Santa Barbara University in the US, on February 23rd, Vietnamese-American scientist Dr Nguyen Thuc Quyen received an Alfred P. Sloan scientific research fellowship.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation was founded in 1955. And, so far, 38 people who have received their scientific fellowships have gone on to win Nobel Prizes in several different fields, while 14 people who have received their mathematics fellowships have later been awarded Noble Prizes in th field of mathematics.
Dr Thuc Quyen – an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Santa Barbara University, is one of only 118 famous scientists, mathematicians and economists to receive this honour in the past 60 years. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation fellowships in science, mathematics and economics are open to professors at universities and colleges in the US and Canada.
They have all been pioneers in the fields of physics, chemistry, molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics and medicine. The fellowships provide the recipients with USD 50,000 USD a year for two years to be used to study anything in any the field in which they are interested.
Dr Thuc Quyen received this fellowship because she is a chemistry research scientist who focuses on research into organic semiconductor, which will help to shape foundation of new technology in the future.
Nguyen Thuc Quyen arrived in the US in 1991, and began her studies at a US university, eventually earning her Ph.D at Los Angeles University in 2001. She has previously received other important awards in field of chemistry such as the Camille Dryfus Teacher Scholar, Plous Award.
Before, she taught and done scientific research at Columbia University and has been teaching at Santa Barbara University since 2004, while working for the Thomas J Watson Research Center of the IBM Company. Dr Thuc Quyen has come back Vietnam three times to attend international chemical conferences here.
