Russia will build a nuclear power station for Belarus at a cost of 9.4 billion U.S. dollars, according to an agreement signed in Minsk Tuesday, local media reported.

The agreement was signed during a visit to Belarus by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

During a meeting with Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko, Putin said the safety of Belarusian future nuclear plant would be higher than those of Japan. "Those projects that we are discussing and we are going to realize they are, of course, the projects of the last generation, and the level of protection is much higher, even despite the fact that Belarus is not in a seismic zone like Japan, " said Putin.

According to him, Japanese nuclear power stations use 40-year- old American reactors, while the Belarusian power station will use modern technologies.
