However, local newspaper Saigon Tiep Thi quoted Tuy as saying that due to health conditions, he did not plan to attend the ceremony. The society sent the certificate and the award to him a couple of days ago.
According to the society, Tuy was chosen for the award thanks to “his pioneering work and fundamental contributions” to global optimization - a branch of applied mathematics and numerical analysis.
Tuy, who is considered as one of the founders of Vietnamese mathematics, is, in fact, the author of nearly 150 scientific articles about a variety of mathematical fields published by international journals.
Global Optimization – Deterministic Approaches, the book he penned with his students, was published and republished by global scientific book publishing company Springer between 1990-1996. It is considered as a classic in the international global optimization field.
The society said they would grant the award, named after the famous Greek mathematician Caratheodory (1873-1950), bi-annually to an individual or a group for their fundamental contributions to theory, algorithms, and applications of global optimization.
