Tan Cang- Cai Mep port receives 160 big vessels (26/08/2010)

After one year of operation, Tan Cang - Cai Mep port has received 160 mother vessels of the world"s leading shipping lines and 213 transit vessels; the port receives weekly 3 mother vessels of large shipping lines such as Mitsui OSK Line, NYK, K"line of Japan, Hanjin, Hyundai of Korea, APL-NOL of the U.S, Germany"s Hapag Lloyd, OOCL, Cosfi, Yang Ming of China. Output of goods through the port reached 270,000 TEUs (equivalent to over 2,000,000 tons).

National demographic database to be established (26/08/2010)

A national demographic database will be set up and supervised by the Ministry of Public Security and local public security forces.

Under the newly-approved Decree 90/2010/NĐ-CP, dated on August 18, the establishment of a national population database targets to provide state competent agencies and individuals with accurate and updated demographic information which can serve socio-economic development requirements.

According to People’s Committee of Vung Tau city, the city has 85 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects and 72 domestic projects which have been created licences with total registed capital of USD 7.86 billion and VND 24,500 billion.

Output of goods through seaports reached 20.63 million tons (17/08/2010)

According to report of Department of Transportation, at the moment, province has 20 ports which are exploiting with capacity of 34 million tons/ year, includes: Thi Vai -Cai Mep area has 11 port with capacity of 31.5 million tons; Vung Tau- Long Son area has 1 combined port and 7 specialized ports with capacity of 2.5 million tons/year. Besides, Con Dao district is exploiting Ben Dam port with capacity of about 100,000 tons/year.

Vietnam listed among world’s top 20 Internet users (16/08/2010)

Vietnam is among the Top 20 Internet-using countries in the world, according to the Royal Pingdom website monitoring service.            

With 24.3 million Internet users (out of the population of 89.6 million), Vietnam stood at No. 20 on the list, right after Canada , which has 25.1 million users (out of the population of 33.5 million), Pingdom said in a report published recently on its website

Math whiz invite doesn’t add up (14/08/2010)

The government is making efforts to invite Ngo Bao Chau, a Hanoi-born mathematician whose research has won international acclaim, to help implement its 2010-2020 national math development program.

Chau, 38, is currently a French naturalized citizen.

Delta faces obstacles implementing Mekong 1,000 project (14/08/2010)

The Mekong 1000 project to sponsor students in the Mekong Delta to pursue their graduate studies abroad has become stagnant due to candidates’ poor English language skills and disagreement between localities and the State Audit of Vietnam.

 

The project aims to promote the Mekong Delta’s industrialization and modernization process, and international integration through improving human resources for the region.

Barefoot science students make tricycle using solar energy (14/08/2010)

The Da Nang Poly-technique University was abuzz with admiration for three “barefoot science” students who designed and built a tricycle using solar energy.

Ta Ngoc Thien Binh, Huynh Kim Trang and Pham Nguyen Son of the Mechanic Department of the university, invested their own money to research and develop the new product because they felt sorry for tricycle drivers, who had to work in the scorching sun in central Vietnam.

IT market forecasted to up 9% in 2010-2014 period (07/08/2010)

Việt Nam’s IT market is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9% over the 2010-2014 period, reported Companiesandmarkets.com, a leading online business information aggregator.

Consumer retail spending reached recorded high in 2009 despite the economic slowdown, in part due to tariff reductions and aggressive price cutting. Government and business IT spending took a hit, but is expected to pick up in 2010.

Virginia Tech to build new supercomputer (05/08/2010)

Pictured is a small cluster testbed that houses the graphical processing units (GPUs) accelerator cards. HokieSpeed is being designed at Virginia Tech as a new heterogeneous supercomputing instrument based on a combination of central processing units (CPUs) and GPUs. Traditionally, only the CPU has served as the brains in computing instruments, and this new combination is expected to greatly improve a supercomputer’s problem solving capabilities.
