Viet Nam will have to import up to 17 billion tonnes of gas for domestic use annually after 2025 despite its sizeable reserves of natural gas, a senior official has said.

Addressing a meeting held on Thursday to release a World Bank report titled Viet Nam Gas Sector Development Framework, Deputy Minister Industry and Trade Hoang Quoc Vuong said Viet Nam has natural gas reserves of 700 billion tonnes.

Proposal to control invasive species (13/11/2010)

The Environment Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is looking to crack down on the import of exotic or alien species to Viet Nam in a bid to protect local ecosystems.

Under the plan drafted by the department on control of invasive species, non-native flora and fauna would have to undergo checks to ensure they are not harmful to native organisms, said Hoang Thi Thanh Nhan, head of the department's Genetic Preservation Division.

New stride in VN-Russia energy cooperation (31/10/2010)

Việt Nam and Russia are going to sign an agreement on building Việt Nam’s first nuclear power plant, said Sergey Kirienko, Chairman of Russia’s Atomic Energy Group (Rosatom).

The agreement will be signed by relevant agencies of the two countries on the occasion of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Việt Nam in late October, Mr. Kirienko said when being received by Deputy PM Hoàng Trung Hải yesterday in Hà Nội.

Intel inaugurates world’s largest chip plant in VN (30/10/2010)

Intel Group on October 29 officially inaugurated its micro-chip plant in Hồ Chí Minh City’s Hi-tech Park, the biggest in the world and the first semiconductor plant in Việt Nam.

The plant, invested with US $1 billion and built for four years, will churn out chipset for laptops and other mobile devices.

Highlight of FDI in the first nine month of 2010 (28/10/2010)

Foreign investment disbursement from January to September reached more than US$8 billion, a rise of 4.8 percent compared to the same period last year says the Foreign Investment Agency.
Foreign investors found Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam the most attractive destination in the country with US$2.23 billion FDI flowing into the area. This was followed by Quang Ninh Province in the north at US$2.15 billion and Ho Chi Minh City with more than US$1.8 billion.

Genetically modified maize helps produce animal feed domestically (28/10/2010)

Viet Nam is growing maize from genetically modified seed to help make it more self sufficient in the production of animal feed.
Trial crops have been established in the northern province of Hung Yen and some southeastern provinces.
At present, the nation has to rely on foreign sources to produce supplies, despite its great agricultural advantages, said the chairman of the Viet Nam Animal Feed Association, Le Ba Lich.

Intel to inaugurate Vietnam $1 billion factory late Oct (22/10/2010)

Intel Corp., the world’s largest computer chip maker, will launch its Vietnam US$1 billion chip assembly and test facility in Ho Chi Minh City on October 29 after three years’ construction.

Intel Products Vietnam Ltd. Co. will organize an opening ceremony for the factory, which covers more than 46,000 square meters in Saigon Hi-Tech Park in District 9.
