VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnam will host the World Information Technology Forum 2009 (WITFOR) for the first time in late August of next year, announced the Ministry of Information and Communications.

The three-day event entitled, “Information technology for sustainable development” will be attended by some 1,500 delegates from almost 100 countries and territories across the world, the majority of which are leaders, scientists and experts in the area of IT.
The forum is scheduled to include 8 plenary meetings and 32 subject discussions, focusing on women’s role in IT development, the policies and experience of some countries in IT development, and the state-enterprise IT cooperation model.

Vietnam registered to host this event to show its determination in realizing the UN’s Millennium Goal. It is taking it as an opportunity to share experience and seek partners, proving Vietnam’s IT development capability and position and turning Vietnam into a destination for IT cooperation and investment.

Leon Strous, Vice Chairman of the International IT Association (IFIP), and Chief International Coordinator of WITFOR 2009, said Vietnam was chosen to host WITFOR2009 because Vietnam is a country using IT and has open policies and mechanisms for IT development.

He said Vietnam’s IT is developing, so its experience and lessons will be very helpful for other countries. Vietnam is also a potential future market for IT.

The Ministry of Information and Communications confirmed that WITFOR 2009 is a very important event and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will attend the opening ceremony as the honorable chairman.

The biennial World IT Forum was first held in 2003 by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), with the aims of promoting cooperation between countries in the IT area and assisting developing countries to apply IT into socio-economic areas.
