President Truong Tan Sang on June 28 visited the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau where he urged the province to make use of its advantage in sea ports to develop the local economy. He promised to have relevant agencies help to resolve difficulties hindering the growth of local ports, in particular transport systems connecting the ports. Accompanied by the provincial leadership, he visited the Cai Mep International Terminal, which can accommodate vessels of up to 150,000DWT. The terminal, located in the province’s Tan Thanh district, about 80 km from HCM City, has a capacity of 1.1 billion TEUs, a 600m-long wharf and a 14m-deep channel. In the 14 months that it has been operational (since March 2011), the terminal has accommodate 151 vessel and handled 351,000 TEUs.
