With outstanding performances in automobile technology, fashion designing and cooking, Vietnam team was ranked first at the 10th ASEAN Skills Competition held in Hanoi from October 23-28.

At a press conference Tuesday, deputy minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Ngoc Phi said that Vietnam took the lead with 15 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze medals.

Malaysia ranked second with 9 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals, followed by Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

This was the third time Vietnam ranked first at the regional skills competition, which is organized every two years. The other two wins were in 2004 and 2006.

Phi said Vietnam competitors are all vocational students.

“Vietnamese laborers in general are considered skillful and creative. At this competition, we have witnessed their good skills in automobile technology, fashion designing and cooking,” he said.

Duong Duc Lan, head of the event’s organizing committee, said the host country had good preparations for the event.

“This year, Vietnam won two gold medals in automobile technology for the first time. It’s because the competitors have not only practiced at school but also worked at the factories,” Lan said.

However, he said Vietnam should improve skills in hairdressing after it was ranked ninth out of ten countries in this occupation.

The event, themed “Skills - Our intrinsic values”, attracted 293 competitors from ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) member countries, competing in 25 occupations.

Deputy minister Phi said the competition was a good test for the local workforce of 56 million people.

He said Vietnam should have more policies in occupational training and facilitating a government plan to build 40 high quality occupation training schools.

“We target 40 percent of them are trained by 2015 and this is a big challenge.”
