province”, lead by Dr. Bui Quoc Nghia on July 9, 2008

Department of Science and Technology organized a workshop of Provincial Scientific Committee to check and accept the Scientific Theme: “Studies of coastal erosion problems occurring in ho Tram – ho Coc areas (Xuyen moc District). Suggestion of technical solutions to anti-erosion to contribute to sustainable development of the province”, lead by Dr. Bui Quoc Nghia on July 9, 2008.

The theme was implemented in October, 2006. The objectives of the theme are to assess general situations of physical geography, coastal erosion phenomena and its damages to coastal areas of ho Tram – ho Coc; to determine the needs for dealing with coastal erosion; to study the cause and mechanism of forming the coastal erosion phenomena; to suggest technical solutions for treating these phenomena; as well as to develop basis of scientific theory helping set up investment projects of anti-erosion at the study areas. While carrying out the study, the research group conducted investigations, surveys, drawing and information gathering regarding to marine dynamics, topography, geomorphography and the frequency of whirlpools, determination of characteristic of wind, littoral drift, and hydrogeology, and movement of sediment in the nearshore zone by waves and currents… The leader of the study suggested technical solutions for dealing with current coastal erosion, including:  shoreline constructions of groins, sand trapping works associated with eco-tourism, facilities for sand by passing along beaches, erection of structures  to protect directly and rehabilitate sand dunes by Protech Tub Technology, foundation of breakwaters made of concrete or Stabiplage or Geosystem material and submerged in the water and parallel to the shoreline, as well as building of sand fences “Ganivelles”. Specially, according to the leader restoring the Ho tram cape (hard point) by construction of groins to protect shoreline and sand dune is a principal solution for dealing with coastal erosion at the whole ho Tram – ho Coc and it should be put in priority to be done first. 

The Check and Acceptance Committee assessed that basically the scientific theme was fulfilled and met its objectives. The research results and technical solutions as presented were generally acceptable and confident which may allow one to develop further studies as well as to set up investment projects in order to deal with the situation in the future. The study was graded with distinction/good level.
