In 02 days from April 21 to April 22, 2016, the Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Provincial Economic Division of Vung Tau City organized the training workshop on identification of suspicious radioactive sources at waste recycling facilities in Ward 2, Ward 7 and Ward 11 of Vung Tau city. There were 120 people participated in the training, including Ward People's Committee officials, waste collectors and people whose work is related to recycling waste.

There were 120 people participated in the training, including Ward People's Committee officials, waste collectors and people whose work is related to recycling waste.

Currently, national and local authorities are deploying workshops and campaigns aiming to raise awareness of radiation safety. The purpose of these activities is to raise public awareness of ionizing radiation, use of radiation in economic development as well as its dangers and threats and preventative measures. Through training on identifying suspicious radioactive sources, scrap traders and owners at waste recycling facilities were equipped with general knowledge about the effects of ionizing radiation on human health and guided on how to handle suspicious radiation sources when signs of radiation are recognized.

The training workshop gives participants information about radiation and its warning symbol. Ionizing radiation can penetrate and ionize materials. Ionizing radiation is invisible, odorless, tasteless and not heat generating. Health effects of radiation when a human body is ionized can be: skin-redness, nausea and dizziness in light radiation cases and cancer or death in more serious cases. Depending on amount radioactive substance absorbed, radiation type, exposure type and duration, radiation may increases the risk of developing cancers or other adverse effects on health or may cause fatal within a few days or months.

The ionizing radiation warning sign applied in Vietnam is an equilateral triangle with a red or black propeller on a yellow background. The symbol was launched by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) On February 15, 2007.
