Recognition Ceremony of the traditional Salt production in Long Dien district

On December 5th, the People's Committee of Long Dien district organized a ceremony to announce "Recognition of Long Dien traditional Salt production tradition". The ceremony saw the presence of Mr. Nguyen Tien Bay - Director of the Directorate of Rural Development, Mr. Vo Van Dung - Member of the Commune, Secretary of the District Party Committee; Mr. Tran Quang Vinh –Chairman of the District People's Council; Mr. Tran Kim Phuc - Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee together with representatives of provincial and district departments and salt producers in the district.

Salt production in Long Dien district has been developed for more than 160 years. With the favorable climate water resource for salt production, Long Dien district has about 402.2 ha of salt production land, which mainly sits in in An Ngai commune with 234.5 ha of land and Long Dien commune with 167.7 ha of land. Average yield of salt production in Long Dien district during 2004 - 2017 reached 29,659 tons / year. On average, salt farmers earn about VND 44.6 million by traditional salt production method and VND 104.6 million for the improved one in which ponds are covered to produce cleaner salt. Despite having higher yield and selling price than traditional salt, due to the high investment cost, the districthas only 35 ha of salt production with the improved method in total of 402.2 ha of salt in the district, 8.7 %).

 

In 2013, salt produced in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province (including salt of Long Dien district) was approved by the National Office of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology) with Certification for "Ba Ria salt”.

 

 At present, salt production process of the majority of salt producers in LongDien town and An Ngai commune are following the traditional method which rely heavily on labor and experience. However, some improved method have been introduced into households to save time and labor cost thus increasing profit. They can be named as using the mechanical - electrification method (water were flowed into pond by air blowers and pumps), using rollers as ground, raking salt by machine and transporting salt by trolleys, which help save time, labor costs and increase profits.

 

 At the ceremony, Mr. Vang Vinh Huy – Vice head of Long Dien District Internal Department announced the Decision No. 2516/QD-UBND dated 10/9/2018 of the Provincial People's Committee on the recognition of the traditional salt production in Long Dien district. Accordingly, salt production in Long Dien district is entitled to preferential policies on development of rural trades as stipulated in Decree No. 52/2018 / ND-CP dated 12/4/2018 of the Government and related policies.

 

Recognition of traditional crafts will help to preserve and develop sustainably the "salt production" tradition of Long Dien district, in line with the development plan for production traditions in the province, and improving salt farmers’ income and livelihood, thus encouraging the continuation of the tradition.
