The launching ceremony of the project “Research and application of circular economy model for sustainable socio-economic development in Con Dao district”

On the morning of April 29, the People's Committee of Con Dao district held a launching ceremony to deploy the project "Research and application of circular economy model for sustainable socio-economic development of Con Dao district" in the period of 2022- 2025, orientation to 2030. 

Attending the ceremony were Mr. Pham Quang Nhat - Director of the Department of Science and Technology, leaders of the District Party Committee - People's Council- People's Committee and Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee of Con Dao district and nearly 100 guests who were representatives of the provincial Department of Science and Technology, Institute for Circular Economy Development, international organizations, businesses, youth unions, women's unions, farmers, communities in Con Dao district and local media.

Con Dao, an island district with revolutionary historical significance, is very important not only to the people of BR-VT province but also to the people of the whole country. Tourism and services are the key economic sectors of the island district, accounting for about 90% of the total annual revenue of the district's economy. However, Con Dao is facing many environmental challenges such as the treatment waste, lack of electricity and water in recent years. Con Dao's ecosystems and resources are in danger of being degraded due to the impact of economic activities and climate change...

The research and application of circular economy in Con Dao district can be considered as one of the strategic solutions to create a breakthrough in solving the current multi-objective problems, helping Con Dao to develop sustainable socio-economic development, improving people's living standards in order to achieve the sustainable development goals of the island district. On the one hand, the application of the circular economy model to Con Dao can meet the needs of socio-economic development. On the other hand, it can preserve environmental sanitation, promoting cultural and ecological values, responding to environmental changes, addressing the requirements and policy of sustainable development and green growth.

The Provincial Department of Science and Technology has collaborated with Institute for Circular Economy Development, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City and Con Dao People's Committee to implement the project "Research and application of circular economy model for sustainable socio-economic development in Con Dao district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province in the period of 2022 - 2025, with orientation to 2030".

At the ceremony, Mr. Pham Quang Nhat shared that applying the circular economy model is a trend in the world, which is important to our Party and State. Circular economy  is being considered as the optimal solution to promote strengths as well as to solve challenges, focusing on the harmonious relationship between ecological environment, social justice and economic development. The research and application of the circular economy model to create a breakthrough in the socio-economic development of the locality is an urgent requirement. Deploying the project in Con Dao, it can meet the needs of socio-economic development. On the other hand. In addition, it can preserve environmental hygiene, promoting cultural and ecological values, and environmental protection. At the same time, it will create many positive changes in serving to promote sustainable growth of the island district, becoming a pioneer island district and a typical model in applying the concept of economy in the province and the whole country.

The project includes 03 objectives and 06 groups of solutions to be implemented. It will be implemented through two phases including phase I (2022-2025) and phase II (2026-2030). After the launching ceremony, leaders of departments and guests visited the booths displaying models, equipment and products related to environmental treatment and protection of domestic and foreign organizations and enterprises.
