The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Wednesday launched a project to manage harmful wastes around the country, using a computer-aided program known as e-manifest to keep track of wastes throughout the process.

Bui Cach Tuyen, head of Vietnam Environment Administration under the ministry, said the project, costing US$3 million including US$2.5 million funded by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), would be executed in three years, with the primary aim of controlling harmful wastes countrywide.

The project will help environment authorities in all provinces and cities to strictly control the discharge, transport and treatment of hazardous wastes by an e-manifest system instead of paperwork.

“The project to be carried out from 2010 to 2012 will include such main works as completing the legal corridor for hazardous waste control, installing facilities for the computer system, training officials and operation,” he said.

Tuyen said the e-manifest system is adopted from Korea’s system of controlling harmful wastes by e-manifest. The computerized system could track the amount of harmful wastes being discharged, transport as well as treatment of wastes.

Last December, KOICA decided to sponsor for the project in accordance with a program in Vietnam to adapt to impacts of climate change.
