Việt Nam is striving to advance to TOP 15 countries in terms of providing software outsourcing services and digital content by 2015.

Việt Nam strives to have some strong telecommunications firms, and bring Internet to all educational establishments, and wide-band mobile communications to 85% of residents. Some 80% of enterprises and social organizations will apply IT in management, production and business operations. IT application will be popularized in education and healthcare sectors.

On December 3 in Hà Nội, the National Steering Committee for Information Technology (IT) coordinated with the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) to hold a summing-up conference on Việt Nam’s 10 years of IT development and application to serve national industrialization and modernization.

At the conference, Mr. Đỗ Trung Tá, the PM’s Envoy for IT and the Committee’s Vice Chairman, said that over the past 10 years, Việt Nam’s IT has become a key economic and technical sector, contributing some 6.7% to the country’s GDP.

Việt Nam currently has high rates of growth in telecommunications and the Internet coverage. The country has some 1,000 software firms, increasing nearly 6 times in the last 10 years, with the total workforce of over 64,000, becoming one of the world’s TOP 10 software outsourcing centers for export.

In 2000, Việt Nam had 300,000 mobile phone subscribers and 3.5 million fixed phone subscribers.

Now, the country has 156.1 million phone subscribers, of which 90.3% are mobile ones, posting a phone density of 180.7 units per 100 residents.

At the conference, Deputy PM Nguyễn Thiện Nhân asked the MIC to instruct localities and telecommunications enterprises to realize the target of qualifying 30% of IT students in terms of professional skills and foreign languages by 2015, so that they can join international labor market. The percentage of people using Internet will surpass 50%.

According to Mr. Nhân, Việt Nam should renovate State management in IT sector, and create more favorable conditions for telecommunications enterprises to development.
