Acceptance of the provincial level research project of developing an experimental model to grow scallion and bok choy.

On March 29, the Department of Science and Technology held a Council meeting to evaluate the provincial research project "Developing an experimental model to grow scallions and bok choy vegetables using German nano tech mineral fertilizer, insect preventing net system and Israeli drip irrigation technology following VietGap certification" in Tan Thanh district.

On March 29, the Department of Science and Technology of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province (DOST BR-VT) held a Council meeting to evaluate the provincial research project "Developing an experimental model to grow scallions and bok choy vegetables using German nano tech mineral fertilizer, insect preventing net system and Israeli drip irrigation technology following VietGap certification" in Tan Thanh district. The project is led by Mr. Tran Dinh Ngan, Center for Applications of Scientific and Technological progresses (DOST BR-VT). Implementation period was from 6/2014 to 12/2014.

Objective of the project was to develop an experimental model to grow scallions and bok choy using German nano tech mineral fertilizers, insect preventing net system and Israeli drip irrigation technology following VietGAP certification in Tan Thanh district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. The aim was to help farmers reducing the use of instant chemical fertilizers, developing sustainable agriculture model to register for the certifition of VietGAP safe vegetable production model.

The farm of Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh at Lang Cat hamlet, Tan Hai commune was chosen to grow vegetables for the experimental model. The model included a 1000m2 insect net system and 1000m2 Isareli drip irrigation system. The products met food safety standards set by the Ministry of Health. The process ensured food safety standards which is the basic requirement to get VietGAP certification.

The result showed that the project successfully developed a complete process for growing scallions and bok choy that suitable to grow in local soil conditions. Surrounding net system has limited 60% of the wind blowing into the garden, keeping the moisture during dry season, limiting the problem of fallen plants during rainy season and minimizing pesticides used during cultivation. Israeli drip irrigation system helps providing water regularly and directly to the plants, creating a moist environment in the soil that promotes the growth of vegetables.

According to the Council, the project provided a low cost vegetable growing model that is suitable to the Ba Ria – Vung Tau climate and meets with the demand of safe vegetables of customers in the province. The research project was agreed for acceptance and graded as average.
