June 6th, 2013, Department of Science & Technology held Scientific Council to approve the project “Multiply model to grow Red Dragon Pitaya in Bung Rieng commune in accordance with VietGAP” headed by Mr. Phạm Tấn Phước (Farmers Association of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province).

Purpose of the project is to build 5 models of Red Dragon Pitaya (Thanh Long Ruot Do) on the area of 2 ha in accordance with VietGAP in Bung Rieng  commune in conformity with model applied sucessfully in Bong Trang commune in order to convert growing model, increase income, enhance the life and production level of farmers.

Since 2009, this model has been deployed for testing in Bong Trang commune. After 3 years of performing the project, Red Dragon Pitaya of 5 models has been accepted by the market with the high price and having stable output. The project has trained farmers team to understand clearly about the steps of red dragon pitaya cultivation in accordance with VietGAP Stadard. 5 households participating the project have got stable life and relatively rich, contributing to guarantee social insurance in the locality. Households taking part in the project see that growing red dragon pitaya gives high productivity, reducing 20-30% expenses due to reducing insectiside and fetilizer amount, less pests, beautiful and sweet fruits and guarantee food sanitation and safety for users with double price in comparison with normal dragon pitaya.  

From such result, Farmers Association of the Province proposed to multiply more 5 models of red dragon pitaya in Bung Rieng commune with scope of 2 ha in accordance with VietGAP. Bung Rieng is one of the

most difficult communes of Xuyen Moc district. The land is lack of fertiles, emerging kinds of diseases, disasters etc. therefore, income of people from agricultural production is very low, the life of people is very difficult. So, converting into the good anti-drought plants, high economic value, stable output such as red dragon pitaya is very necessary.
